It’s elegant and effective. But solid wood construction is very susceptible to shrinking and expansion, and requires a lot of maintenance. “I’ll be overlapping planks of mahogany marine plywood to form the hull, to reduce shrinking and swelling. This preserves the aesthetic appeal of the wood but is so much lower maintenance, and light and strong.”
While the outer hull will be painted, the interior, the breast and transom will have what Smith calls “bright work” of finished mahogany, to emphasize the visual and tactile lushness of the wood.
Above all else; Smith asked that one particular quote be published for the world to read: “I want to thank my wife Miranda Hope for all her support. She’s really stuck it out, both here and in Maine, and just been awesome.” When asked, Smith avowed that he is not in the dog house trying to get out.
