Aside from its own stadium, Great Meadow Polo has use of Ahmad Pirasteh’s arena at Natania Farm south of Warrenton. Stadium polo is also played at the Bleu Rock Inn near Washington, VA in Rappahannock. And former Great Meadow club president Stephen Seager is planning a state-ofthe-art arena, with rubber dust footing to ease the strain on horses’ legs, at his Chetwood Park estate in The Plains.
Rappahannock resident Bill Fannon is reportedly making his treasured field available for Great Meadow to play some of its grass league games on this summer.
“High-income yuppies are drawn to extreme sports and they also like the social aspect polo provides,” polo instructor Doug Barnes remarked. Barnes operates his Great Meadow-affiliated polo school, Destination Polo, out of Willow Run Farm in The Plains. In the past, the average age of someone taking up polo for the first time, tended to be in the 40s because that was when they felt they had enough resources and probably enough time to take up a sport that had always intrigued them. “There are people sky-diving or bungeejumping and then, they think: Why not polo?,” he said.
Kids and Yuppies
Nowadays, the ages are trending younger. A lot of that is attributable to Great Meadow’s polo school program which, over the years, has fed young area players into the regular leagues as well as the interscholastic teams.
