liquor licenses the two men constructed a kiln and began perfecting his malting process. “We are the only distillery in North America that malts its own barley,” Wasmund said proudly.
Instead of burning peat to dry the barley, Wasmund makes a fire of an assortment of cherry and apple wood. The smoky aroma that fills the distillery shop is found extensively in the whiskey.
In January of 2006, Wasmund and McCaskey had cleared the hurdles to began distilling their first batch of their very own whiskey.
A party of three
Wasmund convinced his mother, Helen, to move from New York and join his crew. “I was willing to move down to Virginia to help his dream come to life,” Helen said. Wasmund renovated a few of the upper rooms into an apartment for her to stay in. “I love it, she said proudly, “it’s very spacious.”
Helen helps the two men in whatever way she can, raking the malt floors, shoveling the malt and cleaning up the workspace.
