Hackley’s
pickin’ party
This past Saturday was the season finale of the pickin’ parties at Hackley’s General Store here in Amissville. These events during the spring, summer and fall months are part musical event, part community gathering and also a chance to donate to some worthy neighborhood causes. Brad Nicholas, who owns Hackleys, says the sessions typically begin for the season in late April. Most of the pickin’ parties are in the evening. But in October, as the weather begins to turn cooler and the days get shorter, an afternoon event is more practical.
These events draw musicians from all over our area. Some of the musicians who were there on Saturday were: Debbie Zinn (guitar and vocals) - Luray, Carolyn Sisk (vocals) - Boston, Wesley Gray (fiddle) - Stanley, Dude Settle (electric lead) - Culpeper, Dick Delaney (guitar & vocals) - Culpeper, Brenda Jeffries (electric bass & vocals) - Culpeper, Wayne Willingham (guitar & vocals) - Sumerduck. Most of these musicians are regulars at the pickin’ parties. But drop-ins are always welcome to jump in.
The spectators get involved as well as many of them sing along on well-known songs such as “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” and other country, bluegrass and gospel standards. And, since you’re sitting
