T
he Packing Shed Gallery preX sents the fifth exhibition of etchings with watercolor by master printmaker Viviane de Kosinsky. The opening reception will be held this coming Saturday, October 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. In addition, there will be live music by the award-winning acoustic Americana band, Rock Creek Divide.
The almost obsessive attention to detail required by the printmaking method of etching means intensive hours of concentration. Layers of fluid lines and intricate patterns are drawn with a steel needle through wax before the zinc plate takes the first of several baths in nitric acid and arrives at the printer’s ink table and printing press. According to the Museum of Modem Art in New York, this traditional art form favored by Rembrandt is experiencing a renaissance of popularity.
“The current fascination with etching stands in contrast to the dominance of large-scale woodcuts and lithographs in the 1980s and 1990s. It represents an abrupt departure from the many conceptual and photographically based print projects of the same period, in which the execution of the work was often somewhat removed from the hand’ of the artist.
