John Summers, who resides on the corner of Piedmont and Oden avenues and has lived in the vicinity of the Tbwn of Washington since 1960, talked about his personal experiences to explain why he thinks the area was not previously included within the town’s boundaries.
“Years ago, the lines were drawn racially,” Summers said, referring to the Piedmont-Oden area’s histoiy as a neighborhood comprised of black residents. “I have to look at it as I’ve seen it over the years.”
In response, commission member Jean Goodine said, “I think the racial element is the elephant in the closet that everyone is trying to ignore.”
“There’s a very broad spectrum of issues,” Schwartz said. “I think we have some homework, some working points, some investigation to do.”
The planning commission’s next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 27.
