The Theatre at Washington, Virginia will present a concert featuring songs from what is often referred to as the “Great American Popular Songbook” on Saturday, November 4 at 8 p.m.
The “Great American Popular Songbook” is the phrase often used to include popular standards of the early and middle Twentieth Century, many of which originated on the Broadway stage and in Hollywood movies. Vocal and instrumental music from composers such as Fats Waller, Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael and Harold Arlen will be interspersed with jazz standards from the likes of Eubie Blake and Duke Ellington. The program will include up-tempo tunes as well as ballads, and a few surprises — but most of all, the music will swing!
The concert features Ned Boynton, one of the top guitarists in jazz today and a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene. Randall Kremer wrote in magazine that “near the close of the last century, Ned Boynton’s North Beach Sound came ashore near the banks of the Potomac and quickly became a favorite at the Smithsonian’s Jazz Cafe.” In fact the lineup for the November 4 concert at the Theatre in Little Washington will have appeared just the night before at the Smithsonian’s Jazz Cafe, in the other Washington.
Appearing with guitarist Ned Boynton will be the lovely and talented vocalist, Karen Gray, who appears frequently at the Smithsonian Jazz Cafe, as well as at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, and other Washington venues. Joining them will be the outstanding trio comprising pianist Wayne Wilentz, bassist Tommy Cecil, and drummer Peter Martucci.
Tickets for the concert at the Theatre on Saturday, November 4 at 8 p.m. are $20 for adults and $5 for students 18 and under.
