Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue needs to raise funds to purchase a new fire truck. A benefit breakfast on Saturday and release of a benefit CD are only two of the activities planned to help raise funds over the next year. With the exception of homes in Washington, fire fighting in Rappahannock requires hauling water to the tire. Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue supports fire fighting throughout the county, and desperately needs to replace its 36-year-old fire tanker. Chief Ann Spieker said, “our old tanker has lasted a long time, but it is just worn out and not really safe to drive on steep hills." Chief Spieker explained that fire companies in the county are responsible for purchasing their fire trucks. Washington's need for a new tanker is so great that it was selected by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to receive a grant to help replace its tanker.
