She said that for 2006, Rappahannock properties were assessed, on average, at 86 percent of their real market value, based on sales. The report for 2007, which is not finished yet. may reflect a downturn in the real-estate market, she said.
The county contracts a firm to calculate property assessments for tax purposes. Sale prices for nearby and similar properties are the major basis for the final calculation, she said.
