attorney representing a coalition of employers particularly infuriated me. He focused almost exclusively on Forbes magazine’s ranking of Virginia as the #1 state for business. Although he didn’t say it, what he clearly meant was: “We make a lot of money with illegal labor, so don’t rock the boat.” I was unable to hide the offense that I took at this position and let him and his coalition know as much. Since then, I have heard from many employers and business interests who wanted to let me know that he was not speaking for them and they are committed to helping us clean up the system that allows illegal aliens to gain employment in the Commonwealth. We shall see.
As a career prosecutor, I know another side to the illegal alien issue: crime. Recently, alter a year of excellent investigative work by the regional drug task force in the northern end of the Valley, 26 people were arrested and charged with operating a huge drug distribution ring. Almost all of them were illegal aliens. I know from experience that the rising numbers of illegal immigrants in the Shenandoah Valley has added to our crime problem. In another column, I will discuss my legislative package designed to discourage illegal aliens from residing in the Commonwealth.
