In a precedent-setting decision, Washington’s architectural review board approved a homeowner’s plans to install solar panels on the roof of his house in the historic town.
The review board, which governs changes to buildings in Washington, voted unanimously last Thursday night to give the go-ahead to Bradley Schneider for a number of improvements to his house at 152 Piedmont Ave.
Schneider’s plans for replacement windows, a new roof a storage shed and a new fence met little opposition at the board’s meeting Thursday. But his request to install solar panels stirred up debate.
Chairman Patrick O’Connell noted that no other homes in town had solar panels and said that he could not remember any other applications to, install solar panels coming before the board.
“It does create the first precedent for solar panels in the town, and we should be aware of the historic moment,” he said.
