A feeder is not essential. Seeds can be spread directly cm the ground, and doves, sparrows, and juncoes in fact feed only there. However, this method excludes many other species, like most woodpeckers, which seldom come to the ground.
Regardless of whether you feed on the ground, on a platform, or in die many kinds of tube and hopper feeders, it\i important to keep the feeder and the area under it dean. The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology's Project Feederwatch warns that hulls and bird droppings grow mold and spread disease. It recommends cleaning feeders every two weeks with soapy water and bleach, along with raking the ground to remove the accumulation of waste. Cornell also warns about feeding suet in warm weather, unless it has been specially treated to prevent mold growth.
Bruce Jones also cautions about contamination in seed mixtures. He has found sticks, trash, even broken candies in bags of mixed seed, probably from waste swept up from factory floors. Clay and I have also purchased (and returned!) rancid sunflower seeds, probably leftover from the previous year. Give a new bag of seed a good sniff before you start putting it out.
