Eighty-five percent of the time the work does not entail an immediate need for life sustaining effort. Some calls involve compassion toward disoriented elderly. Some calls require packaging a person for transport by ambulance or helicopter for medical care. Some calls require far greater intervention where there are life threatening injuries or illness.
Sperryville Rescue Squad has the largest geographic area to cover and currently has the smallest squad in the county. The good news is that about eight people have signed up for EMT training that begins at the Sperryville Rescue Squad in February! Richie Burke, a volunteer for 25 years, spoke to the issues of declining volunteer rescue and fire squads throughout the county and the dilemmas that creates for safety.
