Wakefield Country Day School's boys' and girls’ varsity basketball teams held their own against Kandolph-Nlacon Academy this past Thursday.
The girls came away with a conference win. and a fourthquarter comeback put the boys just 6 points behind the Yellow Jackets at the end of the game.
‘'Hungs are starting to come together." said girls' coach Lisa Bodine.
The 2t>-18 victory for the girls brings them to 1-0 in the conference and 3-7 overall.
"We play full court, aggressive, up-tempo," Bodine said.
Wakefield's boys struggled in the fust time quarters of the* game before rallying in the fourth.
The the Is' Brian Shafran's opened the game with a 3-pointer. but the team had trouble putting points on the board after that, with Shafran. an eighthgrade guard, driving the lane again and again only to hit a thicket of Macon players.
Wakefield's passing game was kept at bay too. Attempts to get the ball inside the threepomt line wen* picked off. and shots t'rum behind the line hit the backboard or run more often than the net.
At the end of the first quarter Wakefield trailed 17-7.
In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a number of fast breaks. They tossed in easy layups and held onto their lead, finishing the half at 34-21.
The Owls wen' down by 15 points going into the fourth quarter, but then things started going their way. Forward Andrew Smith hit two 3- pointers and topped those off with with five tree throws, bringing him to 11 points in the fourth quarter and 31 m the game.
Wakefield racked up li points to Macon’s 7, but the surge wasn't enough to put the Owls ahead.
The Yellow Jackets' head coach Sylvio Brutus told his players liefore the game that they could walk away with their first lonfetvnce win that night, and U\. t is exactly what they did.
