The suspicion that an occupational health hazard was the cause of the hospitalization of several employees of a Culpeper dress manufacturing plant has been labeled unlikely by Virginia Health Department occupational health inspectors.
On June 2,16 employees of Aileen, Inc. were taken to a Culpeper hospital with complaints of burning eyes, coughs, weakness of the extremities, nausea without vomiting and dizziness. Elements of hysteria were present. Four patients were admitted to the hospital overnight.
Similar events occurred during the next several days.
State occupational health authorities inspected the plant June 3 and June 14. The inspections revealed the absence of any known toxic substances in any quantity at the plant. The inspections included evaluation of the plant’s ventilation system and surrounding area for a possible source. None was found. Employees were
