Those beef cow producers with tall fescue fields can drastically reduce their winter hay requirements by stockpiling the fall growth of tall fescue. Applying 60-80 lbs. of nitrogen per acre on good stands of tall fescue will provide winter grazing for a cow through most of the winter. With pastures so short due to the drought, it will be difficult to “set aside” a tall fescue field to stockpile, but in the long run, it would probably be better to feed some hay in the fall in order to have the winter grazing available.
The application of 50-60 lbs. of nitrogen per acre to hayfields and pasture from August 1-15 will also stimulate fall growth of these areas for a fall hay cutting or fall grazing.
