Services available to the blind are neither widely publicized nor taken advantage of in rural counties such as Rappahannock. According to Valerie Morrill, representative from the Virginia Commission for the Visually Handicapped, eight Rappahannock residents are registered as legally blind and only four receive supplemental security income for the blind.
A wide variety of services are available to anyone with a vision handicap besides financial assistance, said Mrs. Morrill. Vocational Rehabilitation is offered to those who are legally blind, have a deteriorating eye condition, or need corrective eye surgery. Under Vocational Rehabilitation, a person who qualifies can receive free workshop training and assistance in completing an education that may even include law school.
