The Rappahannock Supervisors voted three to one to approve mileage reimbursements to the Sheriffs Department over the Objections of Commonwealth Attorney George Davis at last Thursday’s Board meeting. Davis reacted with a threat to sue both Sheriffs Department personnel and individual Supervisors to recover “improper payment” of mileage claims.
As Clerk Ned Jones began his routine reading of accounts due at the close of the meeting, Davis asked if the Board members had seen his memorandum attached to the Sheriffs Department report — a memorandum charging that the mileage claims were improper and therefore, shouldn’t be paid.
As required by the State Compensation Board, the reports say policing, not patrolling, noted Supervisor Chairman E. P. Luke.
Davis indicated that this didn’t have any bearing on the legality of the claims. “As reported, I can see no way that the Board of Supervisors can legally pay them,” Davis maintained.
