Very often someone would come running down the road yelling, “The Yankees are coming! The Yankees are coming!” just in order to scare the people. They would run here and there and try to hide everything valuable they could while others would rush off to the woods with the horses. This same thing was repeated very often, so the people began to pay very little attention to the cry.
Yankees Really Came
One day, first part of December, 1863, I was at home when someone came down the road with the same old tale, “The Yanks are coming!”. I thought this time it seemed to be something in his voice that made me feel uneasy. Well, I thought to myself, I’ll get on my horse and go up the road and find out if there is anything to this story. I mounted my horse and up the road 1 went.
