There are, however, a few basic rules that apply to every craft from cruisers to canoes:
1. Have a Coast Guard approved life jacket or floatation device for everyone aboard and do not overload your craft.
2. For offshore craft, carry fire extinguishers and signaling devices such as smoke and dye markers and if possible have 2-Way Radio Communications aboard.
Most small boats and canoes have built-in floatation gear or air-pockets and, because of this, will stay afloat even when full of water or completely submerged.
