spring and summer have created a crisis situation for many Virginia beef cow herd operators.
Here are some suggestions that may help cow herd operators “hang in there” in the present emergency:
1. Cull open, old or unproductive cows. Pregnancy check as soon as possible. Sixty days after the breeding season ends is the right time to have cows examined. Keep the best, sell the rest.
2. If hay and-or silage supplies will be short this winter, cull cow herd to the level that can be wintered economically. Allow for crop residues, stockpiled fescue or winter grazing if these are possibilities but set cattle
