Rappahannock formers are suffering under the most severe drought conditions in almost half a century. In an attempt to alleviate some of the difficulties caused by exceptionally dry weather, county Extension agent Rap Owings has provided the News with the following management suggestions for drought-hit areas prepared by a special VPI Extension Service task force.
Pasture and Hay
Summer annual grasses such as sudangrass or sorghum-sudangrass planted after July 15 even in moist soil are not likely to produce satisfactory yields before frost, especially since they need to be 18-24 inches tall before they can be safely grazed. Seeding a foxtail millet or pearl millet may be a better alternative for additional hay or grazing since they can be safely grazed at any height. The triazine herbicides are all toxic to these.
