Supplemental feeding—Feeding hay or other forage ,yearling, cattle on pasture doesn't appear to be a profitable alternative. Such feed will be in short supply this winter and should be kept for later use on most livestock farms. However, prices of corn and other grains are down from past levels and there may be an opportunity for feeding up to 1 per cent of body weight of grain to cattle where some limited grazing is still available.
Sheep
Sheep producers should consider early weaning lambs and finish them on feed in a cool barn or shed in order to leave the pasture for the ewes.
The task force suggests that farmers with both ewes and cows should cull cows first.
Don’t let the ewes get into too poor a condition prior to breeding. Ewes can be maintained on very little feed when not nursing lambs or just before breeding and lambing. One alternative would be to let them run on poor pasture, stubble fields or wooded areas and feed Vi lb. of corn per head per day.
