Visually handicapped youngsters in schools can also receive special assistance from the Commission, which provides itinerant teachers whose salary is paid half by the Blind Commission and half by the local school system. These instructors provide parent and student counseling, furnish any instructional equipment needed and work with the teachers to explain special techniques for teaching the visually handicapped.
The Commission also operates three low vision clinics in Charlottesville, Richmond and Roanoke where special magnifiers are prescribed. “If a person can’t get out, it may be possible to arrange for someone to come into the home to conduct an examination,” said Mrs. Merrill.
