Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson, characterizing drought conditions in the Shenandoah Valley and east of the Blue Ridge as among the most disastrous in his memory, said he has urged Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland to act expeditiously on Governor Godwin’s anticipated disaster certification request.
Robinson noted that while the Secretary may approve some emergency assistance, such as loans to affected farmers, additional aid may be provided through a Presidential agricultural disaster certification, on recommendation of the Secretary.
“The critical need is for cost-sharing assistance on livestock feed, particularly hay, as early haymaking was scanty, and current pasturage is nil,” Robinson informed Secretary Bergland by telegram; “distress sales of livestock are numerous."
“In much of the 7th Congressional District, there simply is no com crop,” he added. m
