Hundreds Poisoned
In Europe, where the killer mushroom is common, it poisons hundreds of persons every year. Now the species appears to be spreading in the United States, the National Geographic Society warns.
Mycologists, the experts who study the more' than 2,000 species of mushrooms, believed for years that A. pholloides did not grow in North America.
They revised their opinions when it began appearing in California and Oregon in the 1950s. In 1966 the lethal mushroom was found on Mercer Island in Washington.
