Washington, D.C., who had often gathered wild mushrooms in his native France took his family mushroom hunting in a local park and unknowingly picked some of the deadly species. After eating them, his family fell seriously ill and his 10-year-old son died.
Since then, at least two persons died from the poisonous mushrooms in California and two more deaths were reported in New Jersey.
Continuing to Spread
In recent years, collectors have found the species in New York, Delaware, and Virginia. Late last year, Seattle residents were warned that the deadly mushroom is growing in that area.
"It’s practically suicide” to eat even a small amount of Amanita phalloides, cautioned an official of the National Park Service. He advised that mushroom picking be left to the professionals and commercial growers.
