Drought-stricken corn can make a good quality feed. Digestibility per unit of dry matter will be comparable to corn silage made from corn with normal ear development. Feed efficiency will not be as good as normal com silage and is estimated to be 80 per cent of that expected in high quality corn silage.

To improve the quality of silage from stunted corn, it is suggested that the corn remain in the field as long as practical. Stunted corn, although it may not make an ear, will contain considerable moisture in the stalk. This corn will make better silage if harvested when the majority of leaves are “fired”. Even when the plant has “browned”, it will be difficult to make a silage containing 30 per cent dry matter or higher.

Delaying harvest has another advantage of increasing yields if moisture becomes available. The com plant will resume growth if not completely killed by drought, and although it will not make an ear, it will concentrate nutrients in the
