He said that farmers may receive help from federally funded programs that pay 80 per cent of transportation costs for out-of-state hay or emergency feed payments for 50 per cent of feed costs, not to exceed $40 per ton. “You can’t get both programs on the same load of hay,” he added.
Eddins said that farmers will also become eligible for low interest loans from the Farmers Home Administration if the county is declared a disaster area. He added that it took approximately three weeks for any action to take place, basing his estimate on the time lapse last year between when Hanover County asked for disaster designation and when relief programs became effective. “The time element is important because the programs aren’t retroactive,” he said.
