between Dalton and his Democratic opponent Henry Howell. It has become instead a titanic struggle between those who'want Howell to be governor and those who are thoroughly convinced the universe will fall apart if he does.
This is doubly unfortunate. It means that Dalton and the positive aspects of his candidacy will in these final weeks be largely obscured by what has become, by far, the dominant issue: Henry Howell himself. It also means that the voters, instead of choosing between the two men on their merits, will be holding what amounts to a referendum on whether Henry Howell should be governor.
Dalton, of course, must bear his share of the blame for events having taken this turn. Both he and his spokesmen, instead of pushing this thoroughly commendable Plan For Tomorrow platform, have spent an inordinate amount of time talking about such emotional, and at best
