Windows account for 39 per cent of heat loss, conduction through walls and ceilings for 28 per cent and drafts for 34 per cent, Naismith continued. He suggested that caulking and weather stripping be tried first to correct drafts since this solution “costs a heck of a lot less than storm windows.”
He advised use of a rubber based rather than oil based caulking material. While oil caulks are cheaper, they only last two to four years before cracking, according to Naismith. Rubber caulks cost a little more, he noted, but they have a life expectancy of six to 20 years.
Naismith suggested that homeowners check for gaps between where the basement stops and woodwork begins. If the crack is large, first fill it with fiber glass strips and then caulking, he said.
“Tremendous heat loss” also can occur if window glazing is cracked, noted Naismith. He cautioned homeowners to be careful in removing old glazing and to keep it away from pets since it probably contained lead.
Weather stripping is another do-it-yourself cost saver, said Naismith. He suggested putting a door sweep at the bottom of doors with vinyl, foam or felt used for the other three sides. "The trick to weather stripping is to have it stick out so it makes a good seal,” said Naismith, adding that
