The Rappahannock School Board voted late last night to accept the recommendation of Superintendent Dr. William Bloomer and hired Graham Spencer as principal of the elementary school and Charlotte Lambeth as assistant principal.
Spencer was hired several months ago as assistant principal for the elementary school. However, principal Buddy Carter resigned unexpectedly in August and since the beginning of school, Spencer has been acting principal and has covered both elementary administrative positions with help from the central office.
Coincidently, Charlotte Lambeth’s employment as assistant principal should go a long way in quieting charges of racially discriminatory hiring practices levelled against the Rappahannock School Board by the Seventh District Black Caucus. Miss Lambeth is a black graduate student working towards her doctoral degree in administration and supervisory education at the University of Virginia.
Concerned parents and teachers attended Tuesday’s meeting to voice their concerns over the delay in filling the elementary vacancy. The five minutes set aside at the beginning of the meeting for public presentations dragged into an hour before Board Chairman Beverly Massie called a halt to the debate.
