The upstair’s “fire trap” was brought to the attention of the Board several years ago with no results, according to Aubrey Keyser. He suggested that the Supervisors ask the state fire marshall to inspect the building and make recommendations. Keyser maintained that escape from the courtroom would be impossible if fire broke out in either of the bathrooms at the bottom of the stairs.
Hie Supervisors agreed to request fire marshall inspection and authorized the purchase of fire extinguishers. With their action, they unknowingly followed the advice of Fire Departments in Rappahannock and throughout the country:
