Naismith reported on a study done by ('the National Bureau of Standards that concluded any window larger than three feet by three feet should have storm windows installed.

"If the storm window doesn’t fit well, you’re wasting your money,” he commented. Naismith also advised keeping screens up during winter to cut down on energy loss.

"The most important process in putting up storm windows is measuring,” he continued. He suggested caulking on top, on both sides and half way across the bottom as an additional step that could be taken to improve the effectiveness of storm windows.

In regard to hot water heaters, Naismith advised turning the thermostat down ten degrees at a time to reach the “optimal energy-family harmony setting.” A 15 per cent savings in hot water bills can be achieved with each 10 per cent drop in hot water setting.

Energy savers mentioned by Naismith that require installation by a professional included night setback devises, heating circulator blowers and flue vents. He emphasized that turning a thermostat down at night or when no one is at home does save on heating bills.

Fireplaces are “romantic and relaxing but they don’t provide much energy for the wood you burn,” said Naismith. Tight, well fitting dampers and glass doors will both cut down on energy loss in a room with a fireplace.

Wood stoves have greater efficiency if the amount of air going through can be limited, he noted.

He advised cost-conscious energy conservationists not to think about “going solar” for two or three years since the federal government was spending millions of dollars on solar energy research. He. predicted that the research ’would result in improvements in both hardware and installation techniques.
