Salt Water
InterTechnology-Solar Corp of Warrenton has been awarded a $48,950 research grant and a $57,273 study contract to continue development of technology to obtain energy from salt water.
ITC is a manufacturer of solar heating and water systems for commercial and home use. The firm has conducted research and development projects on solar and other alternate energy systems for more than nine years.
The grant from the National Bureau of Standards and the contract from the Energy Research and Development Administration will enable ITC-Solar to pursue its investigation of the practical applications of the principal of osmosis to generate power.
ITC-Solar calls the technique an osmo-hydro energy system. It uses differences in salt concentrations between two saline solutions, or between fresh and salt water. The company’s scientists have experimented with brine from the Dead Sea.
ITC-Solar recently reached an agreement with Van Swaay Installaties, a Dutch firm which will market ITC’s products and services in The Netherlands.
