Unusually high popfiliations of the locust leafminer have caused some concern this year. This is the insect that causes the apparent browning of leaves and diseased look of black locust trees.

Adult leafminer beetles hibernate in bark crevices and litter on the forest floor. They become active in early spring, feeding on a variety of tree species.

Eggs are laid on the undersides of locust leaves. After hatching, the young larvae eat into the leaves, forming a “mine” within each leaf. After feeding for several weeks, the larvae pupate within their mines, and emerge as adult beetles (usually sometime in July). These adults mate and lay eggs to begin a second yearly generation.

The adult beetles eat irregular holes in leaves and may cause loss of foliage on their host trees. Most of the apparent damage, however, is caused by the larvae within the leaves.

The locust leafminer is a native insect species, and is a natural part of the forest ecology. A natural predator or parasite will never severely deplete the population of its host species. To do so would destroy its own food supply.

Several successive attacks to locust trees may be fatal, but the trees can usually withstand these attacks and deaths are not common. The damage is mainly aesthetic and no control is recommended.
