The Rappahannock Supervisors expect the county to receive approximately $22,000 from the federal government in lieu of taxes on national park land. However, due to terms in the “in lieu law, Rappahannock may receive only $6,000.
According to a release from Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson, the federal government “is short changing Virginia counties in payments in lieu of taxes on national park lands.’’
What is involved, according to Robinson, is a law passed by Congress last year which includes a formula for annual payments of up to 75 cents per acre to local jurisdictions on certain federal lands on which no local property taxes are paid, principally in national parks and national forests.
