If a trace element deficiency is spotted early enough in the growing season, one can apply a foliar application of the trace element to prevent further crop loss and follow after harvest with a more lasting soil application for the next crop.
If the problem is a lack of one of the major nutrients or low pH, applying fertilizer or lime now may not solve the problem because it takes some time for these elements to become available in the soil.
