accident. The Code of Virginia, Article 4, Title 46.1213 does not specify the distance to be maintained between two automobiles. It notes that the distance should be “reasonable and prudent, having due regard to the speed of both vehicles and the traffic upon, and conditions of, the highway at the time.”
With regard to “motor trucks” and buses, the section is specific in that it states that the driver of either of these vehicles “shall not follow another motor truck or bus within two hundred feet..." It does not indicate, however, these drivers can't follow a car more closely.
Complaining motorists, who have managed to avoid a crash despite being “tailgaited,” take little solace in knowing that if they were to be hit from behind, it may be readily apparent that following too closely was the cause of the accident.
