Virginia farmers lobbying in Washington last week tallied two victories and one disappointment.
A victory came when Congressman William Wampler of Virginia’s 9th Congressional District, Virginia’s lone representative on the House Agriculture Committee, gave "full support” to American Agriculture Movement’s (AAM’s) effort to ob.ain from the Congress and the Administration action on the serious income situation continuing to face American farmers.
Wampler further agreed to co-sponsor an AAM-backed joint resolution to set commodity loan rates at 90 per cent of parity if AAM leaders in Washington obtained agreement from House Speaker Tip O’Neill to bring this matter to the House floor before the end of the session.
AAM farmers made clear to the congressmen with whom they spoke that the continuing effort to improve farm income through revision of governmental policies should be among the Congress’s highest priorities.
