In another matter covered in DuFreshne's letter, Luke reported that the Highway Department had given the Rappahannock School Board 30 days to repair the blinking school zone caution lights in front of the high school. If not repaired within that time, the Highway Department will remove the blinkers at the School Board's expense. The lights haven’t functined for approximately two years.
Luke also reported that the "no passing” zone in front of the high school had been extended after the traffic engineer had checked the site.
Noting that the village of Woodville had a dangerous intersection also, Supervisor H. B. Wood said he wished he’d known that the traffic engineer was in the county. According to Wood, hazardous traffic conditions in Woodville are primarily the result of motorists’ failure to abide by the 45 mile per hour speed limit there. "How are you going to stop them from going too fast?” he asked.
“We do need more police patrolling here—by the state or someone,” Luke responded.
Commonwealth Attorney George Davis countered that no traffic control could have prevented the recent Sperryville accident.
Luke agreed with Davis but also noted that speed limits in the town of Culpeper were obeyed as a direct result of strict enforcement practices.
