Malignant melanoma, a relatively uncommon cancer of the skin, occurs usually as a dark brown or black, small, mole-like growth, which becomes larger and is ulcerated and bleeds. It can begin from a pre-existing mole.
In addition, certain abnormal skin conditions which tend to become cancerous have been identified. The most common—senile or actinic keratosis —is a small skin thickening which usually develops on an exposed part of the body and generally occurs in older persons when skin has been exposed to sunlight for many years.
Only a physician can determine the nature of an abnormal growth, whether it is benign, precancerous, or cancer. Anyone with a suspicious skin change should visit Saturday’s free clinic and be checked by one of three specialists from the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville who will be on hand.
