On Saturday, November 11, the Rappahannock Unit of the American Cancer Society will sponsor a free skin cancer detection clinic from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the elementary school. We urge all Rappahannock residents—men and women, adults, teenagers and children—to take advantage of this serv ice.
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. It is also the most curable, if detected and treated in time. Over 110,000 people in the United States will develop skin cancer this year and another 3,000 Americans will die of this form of cancer.
The tragedy is that many will die needlessly. The symptoms of skin cancer are clearly visible to any reasonably alert physician. If brought to the attention of a doctor early enough, m alien ant cells can be removed before they cause any vital damage.
Skin cancers can develop in almost any area of the skins. Exposed parts —face. neck, forearms and backs of the hands are the most common sites. Skin cancer may appear as a dry scaly patch, or a pimple that won't go away.
