In the spring, the freshmen (9th graders) will also be tested for minimum competencies.

The results of these tests will be used to help design courses of instruction at the high school as well as serving as a graduation requirement.

The passing score for the classes of 1981 and 1982 will be 70 per cent on the Reading Test and 70 per cent on the Mathematics Test. Students who achieve a score .of 70 per cent or above on each test will be certified for graduation upon completion of all other high school academic requirements. Students who satisfactorily complete the minimum competency requirements will have no further competency tests. Students scoring below 70 per cent on either test will have an opportunity to take the test again in April of each year until a passing score is achieved. Officials have not yet decided what type of certificate or diploma will be awarded to a student who does not pass minimum competency tests.

These Minimum Competency Tests are being used in all other school systems in Virginia and in nt least 16, other states. Remediation will also be offered to those failing the tests.
