(Continued from Page 1) Jacobsen said Wednesday morning that 100 additional acres on the north flank of the mountain had burned during the night, bringing the total of acreage damaged in the two-week-old fire to 400.
Jacobsen reported that the Park Service planned to bring in a helicopter on Wednesday “as an experiment to see if it's effective for water drops” on hot spots and on the more inaccessible rocky peaks. He added that changing winds would make it difficult for the helicopter to maneuver and noted that water drops would be totally ineffective if done from too high an altitude, causing the water to turn into mist before it hits the fire area.
Jacobsen doesn’t expect the helicopter experiment to prove successful in putting out the fire. “Without question, it will continue to burn until we get some significant rainfall,'1 he said, adding that neither national nor park weather forecasts called for precipitation anytime in "the near future."
Noting that fire conditions
The Flint Hill Fire Unit responded to a brush fire on the Brew Wood property this week. They were called to a roadside fire on Route 522 this week. On Monday evening they assisted the Washington Fire Unit in Gid Brown Hollow.
