After this, he joined the Army, and was trained as a wireman at Fort Dixon. When he got out, he decided to go back and get an education. So he went to night school at Boston University, and developed a taste for English Literature, to the point where he went on and graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a Teaching Certificate. Having graduated from high school in 1961, Weems emerged from college with a degree in 1971. He smiles, and says that he hadn’t realized before what a long time it took.
Armed with his Teaching Certificate, Weems went to Nantucket and taught Industrial Arts in the local high school. But he says that he began to stagnate, and not being one to allow boredom to creep in, he left teaching and opened a gift shop on the Island.
