Agriculture VEGETABLE GARDEN TOUR—If you are interested in growing vegetables and would like to learn and share ideas about production practices and variety selection, you are invited to the Vegetable Garden Tour next Tuesday, July 17. Three long time vegetable gardening families have offered to share their knowledge and experiences with you. All three are regular vendors at the Farmers’ Market and their gardens range in size from about one fourth of an acres to 5 acres.
The tour group will leave the Sperryville Emporium at 9 a.m. and visit the vegetable gardens of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Atkins, Sperryville; Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Burke, Five Forks and Mr. and Mrs. Silas Martin Jr. Amissville.
This event is co-sponsored by the Rappahannock Farmers’ Market Association and the Extension Home Horticulture Committee.
FESCUE-Over the past ten years many Rappahannock farmers have tu'ned to tall fescue as a method of extending their grazing season. In most cases, the cost of wintering beef cows, sheep and horses can be greatly reduced by using stock-piled fescue to reduce the amount of stored hay fed. Stored feed requires machinery and labor not only in harvesting and storing but also in feeding back during the winter months.
