On July 2, five hundred million new Susan B. Anthony coins were released and put into general circulation. The coin has the portrait of Susan B. Anthony on the obverse face in recognition of Miss Anthony’s leadership in securing the right for women to vote. It is larger than the quarter but smaller than the half dollar, and is lighter than the half dollar, weighing approximately one-third as much as four quarters.
Susan B. Anthony was a great American who devoted her life to the cause of woman suffrage. Her crusade continues the heritage of all heroic Americans who have built this country on the belief that equality is the right of every citizen, not the privilege of a few. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts in 1820, and was raised in a family of Hicksite Quakers whose members were often the backbone of liberal thought and action in 19th century America.
