James Franklin Williams Jr., of Front Royal, charged with hit and run resulting in personal injury, was sent to jail on Monday to give his attorney the opportunity to confer with him.
Lawyer Lee Albrecht asked Judge Rayner V. Snead at Monday’s opening of the July Circuit Court term for permission to withdraw as Williams’ counsel. Albrecht reported that Williams had not been in contact with him once in five months even though Albrecht’s office had repeatedly tried to contact the defendant. Albrecht also noted that he had never been formally retained by Williams.
In response, Williams explained that he had no transportation. He added that he wanted Albrecht to continue to represent him.
“So there’s no real conflict,” said Judge Snead, “just a lack of cooperation."
When Albrecht answered that he had not seen “even the beginning of an effort by the defendant—either in person or by phone—” to aid in preparation of his defense, Snead announced that he would place Williams in the Fauquier County jail. “You will be able to communicate with him there,” he told Albrecht. “Let the court know when you’re ready for trial and then we’ll decide whether to allow bond,” Snead added, revoking Williams' current bond and remanding the defendant to the Sheriff s custody.
Sentencing of Calvin Hall of Huntly, found guilty of shooting Harry Lewis in an incident at Pine Knot Inn last year, was delayed, pending receipt of a work and home plan.
