What can you do if the current goes off and you have a freezer full of food? First of all, don’t panic. Secondly, don’t open the freezer door or lid. If your freezer is full, the food will stay frozen for 48 hours, if only half full, it should stay frozen about 24 hours. Cover the freezer with a blanket or old newspapers to provide extra insulation.
If your freezer will be without power for an extended period of time, consider adding dry ice. Fifty pounds of dry ice should keep the temperature of food in a 20 cubic-foot cabinet below freezing for 3 or 4 days if the door is not opened; in a cabinet with half a load or less for two or three days. Place it on thick cardboard or boards on top of the frozen food or on shelves—not directly on the packages.
Some items can be refrozen if they are only partially thawed. You may safely refreeze frozen foods that have thawed if they still contain ice crystals or if they are still cold - below 40
